Who Should I Believe?

“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”

II Peter 2:1

We live in a world where we are bombarded with news from every angle. The local and national media, social media, and even the global media. We hear the chatter on social media and it seems that information, whether factual or not, spreads at a rapid pace. We have people offering us advice and those who want to share with us their far-fetched conspiracy theories. Sometimes, we subscribe to the belief that if the internet said it, then it must be true. I have heard some pretty outlandish things these last few weeks and it seems it is hard to find a legitimate source of information.

I once went to a friend’s church and was a bit out of my element. My church history had mostly consisted of attending a conservative church and this church was anything but conservative. My friend was excited to invite me, and he insisted we sit in the front row. The church service started and people began jumping around all over the place. My friend got into it as well, and I had to push him away from me. The man in front leading this was saying things that were not biblical. He brought over the microphone and asked me what I thought about the whole thing. I was caught like a deer in headlights and did not know what to say so I said the first thing that popped into my head, “You guys are crazy!”

My friend was upset with me and so was his family. I told him we shouldn’t have sat up front and they shouldn’t have put a microphone in my face. We got into a heated debate and almost came to blows. I pointed out things to him that I knew were not biblical, and he simply stated, “We all have our ways of worshiping God.” It reminded me of Cain and Abel and what God said in Genesis 4:7, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” There are some who would mix a little bit of truth with a lie to make it seem palatable, but we are warned here about these false prophets. We are warned to not follow or listen to those who speak contrary to God’s Word. We must always consider the source of where we get our information and compare that with God’s Word to determine if it is right or wrong.

I only know one source that is trustworthy and only one source that brings me true comfort and peace. The Bible is never wrong and it has been relevant for thousands of years. It is a source I have come to rely on, and I try not to go a day without reading it. The Word of God is what keeps me on the right path, and it is a straight stick that shows me the crooked ones of false prophets, including myself at times. The Bible is our source of truth and must be relied on as such.

Are you following after God or are you listening to anybody and everybody? Is your source of truth the Word of God or the gossip of Facebook? Do you pick and choose what you will believe in the Bible or do you adhere to whole counsel of the God? May we ever be mindful of false teachers, and may we seek to know the truth. Who will you believe today?
