“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”I Corinthians 15:57
We often give ourselves too much credit when we think we are good at doing one thing or another. We take credit for doing things as if we designed ourselves and gave ourselves our talents and skills. Every nuance of our being was designed and planned by almighty God. As a teenager, I remember seeing Jurassic Park and being amazed at how the movie studio recreated dinosaurs that looked so real. State-of-the-art computer animation was on full display, but even that skill was given by almighty God. I grew up around Christian kids who seemed to have no problem obeying God, like it was second nature to them. I wanted to do right, but it seemed so hard, like a dream that is not unattainable. Maybe you have looked at other Christians and felt the same way as you struggle with the flesh, but they seem to say “no” the flesh with no problems at all.
I have come to realize that the victory has nothing to do with being a “super-Christian”, but it has everything to do with our Lord Jesus Christ as He is the One who gives us true victory. God gives us all the grace we need to combat sin and have victory in our lives. There is not one person born with a “do right” DNA strand, as we all struggle with our sin nature. Romans 7:24 states, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Things would be hopeless if the text ended there, but praise God for the next verse which answers that question, “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” There is victory from sin, but it is only through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Where are you today friend? Do you find your sin to be hopeless? Do you feel as if there is no victory that can be had? Romans 6:13 states, “Neither yield (do not present) ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield (present) yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” Are you presenting yourself to the flesh or to God? The secret to victory over sin is found through Jesus Christ our Lord. May we find freedom through Him, and give Him all the glory for the great things He will do.
