True Repentance

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

Proverbs 28:13

I have tried many times in my life to cover my tracks and look around when I did something I should not have. I looked from side to side, not realizing that my God was watching over me like a security camera in a store. He sees and knows all and there is nothing that can be hid from Him, even though Adam and Eve sought to hide themselves in the garden. He called out to them as He knew they were hiding. There is nothing that can be hid from Him, so there is no use in us trying, even though we often do.

There was an evangelist who came to our church who was used of God to preach some amazing messages. God spoke to my heart through several of those services, and it was a big help to me in my spiritual life. The church services were quite powerful, but God also used this evangelist as he spoke in chapel at the Christian school. Revival seemed to break out in the school and there were several decisions made that week. Kids were crying and making things right with each other and more importantly, with God. I was hearing great things about other kids that week, and on the last day of the week, revival came to my own daughter.

She came to us and confessed some things she had done, and she sought to make things right. We all cried as she made things right, and although I was not elated to her of her transgressions, I was grateful that God got ahold of her heart and she obeyed Him in making things right. She had hid some things from us, but she no longer wanted to hide her sins. I was grateful that she allowed God to work in her heart, She was done hiding things, and she wanted to forsake that which God had convicted her about.

God does not show mercy to us when we try to hide things as it shows an unrepentant heart. Numbers 32:23 states, “…behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.” I have never been successful in trying to hide my sin, and I can attest that it never made things better. At times I was sorry that I got caught more than I was truly sorry for the wrong I had done. God showed mercy on me when I confessed and forsook my sin, and opposed me the times I tried to hide my sin. The peace that comes when you make things right with God is priceless and there is no rest like the rest He gives.

Where are you today friend? Are you trying to hide your sin from God? Do you have trouble resting at night worried that you might be exposed? God is aware of our sins even though we may think we are pulling one over on Him. May we allow God to search our hearts, and may we confess and forsake the sin He reveals to us in our life. James 1:15 states,”Then when lust (desire) hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished (full-grown) , bringeth forth death.” Sin always brings about death, so don’t wait another second to make things right while you can. Will you continue in your sin? God forbid!
