The Light of the World

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

I John 1:5

I recently went out to the Grand Canyon and sought to hike it for the first time. My friend and I left town later than we anticipated, so we did not arrive there until well after dark. We travelled about 500 feet into the park and it suddenly became pitch black. There was no light other than our headlights and when we cut those, it seemed as though the world had shut off. We just stood there in awe of the sky which illuminated amidst the darkness. It had been quite some time since I had seen the stars so clearly and my phone, with all its fancy technology, could not capture the beauty my eyes were beholding.

I was amazed that even though it was pitch black outside it made the stars shine so bright. The darkness of the sky brought out the brightness of the stars, and I could have honestly gazed up at the sky for hours on end. I imagined my Creator turning on the heavenly lights for all to behold. I imagined Him hanging those stars for us to enjoy, and I imagined the beauty of only what He could see from His vantage point. It seems we have created all kinds of light to distract us from the darkness in our lives and to drown out all that we fear that is inside us. We often turn on the “false” lights to distract ourselves from the real light.

I have been in dark places in my life, and places I would be ashamed if anyone knew about them. Places I never dreamed I would be, and places where I had no business being. Darkness in my life where there was no light and there were no blinking stars. There was no beauty in any of it, and I sought out ways that did not include the True Light. I buried myself deeper in my dark hole, and I sought refuge in darkness only to find more of the same. It is interesting that when we are in a dark place mentally or spiritually, it is reflected in how we act and in the things we amuse ourselves with. I knew the way out of my dark hole, but yet I choose to remain there, determined to find my own way out. I became unhappy and it seemed nothing went right for me. I tried to put on a smile, but out of the abundance of my dark heart my mouth spoke. I soon began to realize that there was no way out of my darkness but God.

I began to draw lines in my life that separated God’s light from sin’s darkness, and I began to seek God’s help. Little by little, I submitted to His help to pull me out of the darkness that I once so desperately craved and began to realize how awful that darkness really was. I began to learn about the True Light, not as a duty, but in a way that I desired to know more about Him. I knew all the Bible stories and the miracles, but I failed to know Jesus personally and intimately. I failed to allow Him to reign in my life, and I missed out on that close walk that He so desired to have with me from the beginning of time. I was in darkness due to my sinful ways and habits, and I had forgotten how good it felt to be redeemed and walking in the light. Now, there is nothing I would trade for a close walk with my Savior, and I am grateful that He continued to seek me even though I chose not to acknowledge Him.

Where do you find yourself today friend? Are you in a dark place in your life? Do you find yourself lost and in a place of hopelessness? Do you think there is no way out of your situation? Do you realize that Jesus, the Light of the World, is seeking you in your dark condition? Maybe you have never had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and you are starting to realize that only He can fill that dark void. Maybe you have a personal relationship with Him but you have allowed the darkness of sin to overtake your heart and block the light of the world. Maybe you are running from Him and trying to find other light in darkness. I think of Moses in Exodus 34:35 which states, “And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone:…” Does your face shine with the light of God? Will you continue in darkness or will you seek the True Light in whom there is no darkness? May our face shine with the True Light and may it lead a dark world to Him.
