Speak, Not Strike

“And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.”

Numbers 20:7-9

My wife and daughter love to shop at IKEA, but I will proudly say that it is not one of my favorite places to go. The store is massive and it seems to never end, especially if you are trying to find your way out. It is like a mirror maze you would see at the state fair, and I always seem to get stuck in the middle. We have bought many items from this store, and I can attest that a marriage can handle anything if it can handle assembling a piece of IKEA furniture.

The first time we put a piece of furniture together, we went to bed with the sun setting on our anger toward each other. I quickly grew frustrated with the project as Rebekah insisted I read the instructions, when I thought it should have just come together. She was trying to help me, but I thought she was trying to get in my way of assembling this project. I am not one to always skip reading the instructions, but I only grew confused and frustrated as I read them, even though it looked so easy to assemble at the store. I finally gave in to Rebekah’s advice and she walked me through how to interpret the instructions. Rebekah speaks “IKEA” fluently, and I sort of stumble through it and get in about every 3rd or 4th picture.

I have come to learn that the instructions are important, and there is a reason why they are included with most every project. If you don’t understand what the instructions mean, it is best to employ someone to help you and explain them. I would have avoided a lot of problems and heartaches if I had only heeded to the instructions of anything I was working on. You may think you know how to do something, but it is always best to do as you have been instructed to do. There are no shortcuts, and there should not be extra parts left over when you are done.

God’s instructions are much more important than those that come with IKEA furniture. Moses found this out the hard way as his emotions got the best of him. He was told by God to gather the people together and give them water from the rock, the same people who thought of stoning him. God instructed him to speak to the rock, but in his anger, Moses hit the right twice. Water still came out of the rock, but it was not done the way God had instructed him to do so. He did not follow the instructions he was given, and it cost him dearly. He was not allowed to go over into the Promised Land, but he was only able to catch a glimpse of it before God took him to Heaven. He paid a great price for this error, and we will as well when we do not heed to the instructions of God.

Where are you today friend? Are you trying to skirt around what God has said in order to do what you want to do instead? Are you following God’s instructions or are you trying to do things your own way? What will it cost you? What blessing will you miss out on because of your disobedience? May we always follow God’s instructions, and may we not go to the right or to the left, but may we only follow Him.

Stay in the Fight!
