“For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.”Hebrews 7:26-27
There is no one else in the world who can give godly wisdom and understanding like Jesus, our High Priest. He knows what we need on a daily basis, and He is one who can be trusted. My dad once told me, “Never take advice from someone who is not successful in the area in which they are giving advice.” I have had people try to give me financial advice who were not financially savvy and were terrible with money. I have shied away from their advice and did not carry on with what they had prescribed me to do. I look to those who practice the wisdom they share, and I look to those who are successful in how they lead.
I have always thought of a leader as one who leads out in front and lives the life they command others to live. I think of the virtues of Jesus Christ and how He walked the same earth we walk today. He came to seek and save, and He came to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. He was the perfect example for all of us to see and He exemplified holiness in how He lived His life. He never complained through the trials, but instead always fully surrendered to the Father’s will. He was different than the high priests before Him as He did not need to confess and make a sacrifice for His own sins. I can take Him at His Word and trust in Him as He knows the paths I should take. His commands and wisdom can be trusted and it will stand for all eternity.
Our High Priest walked in our shoes yet without sin. As I ponder this, I think of His immortality and sinless perfection. I think of His accessibility as I seek His presence or forgiveness. I think of how He is unlike me in every way, and I think of His holiness. He did not to have to perform yearly sacrifices because He paid the price for me once and for all. His sinless perfection allowed Him to be the perfect sacrifice for my sin. His sacrifice that was only needed once and a sacrifice that would be the remedy for the sins of the world.
Where are you today friend? Have you accepted the perfect sacrifice for your sins? Do you realize what your High Priest has done for you? Do you keep a current account with Him? Are you heeding His words of wisdom He offers? Are you in His book of wisdom, knowledge and understanding? To whom are you listening today? Will you take Him at His Word or will you continue to seek another way? May we look to our High Priest for forgiveness and guidance, and may we point others to the way, the truth and the life.
