Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Genesis 6:22

I remember my parents always telling me, “Delayed obedience is disobedience.” They wanted immediate and full, wholehearted obedience, not just outward actions when I felt like getting around to it. Greater than my parents is our God and He requires full and immediate obedience. We must not fool ourselves into thinking there is such a thing as partial obedience.  We can fool most people by obeying on the outside, but we can never fool almighty God as He knows our heart.

As a young boy, I was always looking for ways to cut corners on obedience. I wanted to do things my way and in the time frame that I wanted to do them. To say I was strong-willed would be a gross understatement. My backside always smarted for my lack of full obedience, but I never seemed to learn my lesson.

I was invited to a friend’s house for a birthday party after Sunday School, and I was excited to go. I learned right before we left that we would be going to the movie theater by church to take in a double feature. Upon hearing the news, my heart started to beat real fast as I knew I was not allowed to go to the movie theatre. My friends were all allowed to go, but going to the movies was forbidden in my home. My mom gave me money to give my friend for his birthday, and I departed church in his mom’s van.

We went straight from church to the movies, and I was constantly looking around to make sure there was not a detective following me. As we entered the dark theater, I felt better as I could hide in the darkness. I knew better, but I did not want to be left out of the fun. We had a good time and we were enjoying ourselves, and I soon forgot that I was disobeying my parents.

After both movies, we went to my friend’s house and the day was far gone. It was about time for us to go back to church, but I did not want to miss out on the food and cake. I was hanging out with my friends without a care in the world until the phone rang. It was my mom calling from the church to see where I was. My friend’s mom explained to her the activities of the day and that we were running late. My heart dropped as my mom was made aware of my disobedience. My mom seemed to get on a rocket and fly to my friend’s house as she showed up fairly quickly. I broke several rules that day and even used the money meant for my friend’s birthday on some arcade games. I was not like Noah that day, and my backside paid the price for my disobedience.

I admire Noah for His faith and obedience as he did everything God commanded him to do. He lived in a society that was so wicked that God planned to destroy the whole earth due to their wickedness. Noah did not follow the rules of society, but he instead followed the law of God. God gave him specific commands on how to build the ark and whom to include as passengers, and Noah did not go His own way, but his obedience saved his life. Hebrews 11:7 states, “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”

Are you trying to get by with “partial” obedience? Are you fully obeying all the things God has commanded you? Are you actively pursuing a life of obedience? 1 Samuel 15:22 states,”And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken (heed) than the fat of rams.” Are you obeying on the outside, but your heart is not surrendered to the commandments of God? May we be fully and immediately obedient to God in all things. Psalm 119:10 states, “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.” May we not question God’s commands and may it be said of us, “according to all that God commanded [him/her], so did [he/she].”

Stay in the Fight!
