No Greater Love

“For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure (perhaps) for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth (demonstrated) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:7-8

When I was a young boy, our pastor had some cool and exciting news one Sunday morning. I often had trouble staying awake during the morning service, but this particular Sunday, he said something that piqued my interest. He spoke of our church being part of a movie set, and some of the church people having bigger roles and others being extras in the movie. I had no acting talent, but I figured it would not be hard and I imagined the fame and fortune I would rake in. I ignored the fact that certain people had already been selected for certain roles and at this time, they really just needed extras. I did not let these minor details get in the way of my dreams, hopes and ambitions.

We set out one Saturday morning and headed north to film this movie, and I was all excited to get started and to make it big in the movie industry. I was nothing more than an extra, but I was destined to be more after the director realized the talent he was working with. I understood it was a Christian movie and not a Hollywood production, but I figured one had to start somewhere. My sister, mom and I were given instructions of what we were to do, and the scene we were in had us running from one side of the road to the other and shouting because we were scared of the horses coming down the road. I tried to shout loudly and get into the frame so the director could see my raw talent for acting coming out on the big screen. We filmed the scene several times, and then they told us we were done for the day. I did not get my big break, and I could not even find myself onscreen when the movie came out. My childish dreams were dashed, but the movie had a bigger message than my thespian pursuits.

The movie was about a man who struggled with heartbreaks that lead him to some addictions he had trouble breaking free from. He became a born-again Christian and God began to work in his life and called him to be a pastor. His life changed, but it was not without trials or problems. He was told to quit preaching by the local community and government or he would be killed. He avoided death for a time, but was beat up and persecuted as he sought to preach the Word. My dad had a cameo in the movie as part of a group of thugs who sought to beat up the pastor. The pastor did end up giving his life for the cause of Christ as he refused to quit preaching the Word. He knew what God had done in His life, and he was obedient to do what God has commanded Him to do. This movie was based on a true story, and it was an example of what the Father had done for us by sending His Son to die as payment for our sins.

The pastor in the movie loved his community, even though they persecuted him and ultimately took his life. He saw past their disdain, mocking and threats and saw them as the Heavenly Father saw them. The Father did the same for us, and He sent His Son to die for the worst of the worst. The Son willingly gave up His life for those who would hate Him, and for those who couldn’t care less about the sacrifice that came at the expense of the Son of God. He didn’t die only for those we would consider great Christians, but He died for all of mankind in their worse state. We might die for those we love, but would we die for the person who despises us the most? It is true that there is no greater love from a holy and just God who would send His Son to die for the sins of the world. This love cannot be matched by or compared with anything else.

Where are you today friend? Have you accepted this great love? Do you know that God loves you more than you could ever imagine? Do you know He will change your life like no other? Have you experienced His great love? May today be the day you come to know Him as your Lord and Savior, and may today be the day you experience His amazing love for you. How about you Christian? Do you thank Him for His amazing love? Do you live like you are grateful for His amazing love? Do you share with others this amazing love? May God help us to share Him with the world, and may we never lose sight of His great love for us.
