My Plans…

“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

James 4:15

The saying goes “If you want to make God laugh, then tell him your plans”. I will say I have made Him laugh millions of times with the plans I have made in my life that did not quite turn out like I expected.

I recently went to the gym and my night seemed to quickly turn into a comedy of errors. I had my bag packed, headphones in, workout gloves ready, and my membership card ready to be swiped. I was listening to a podcast while walking to the gym when my headphones suddenly unpaired themselves. I did not bring the case to pair them back to my phone, so I was devoid of headphones. I thought this was a bummer, but I was still determined to have a good workout.

I arrived at the gym and swiped my membership card, but the computer made an ugly sound. I was given the stop sign by the lady at the front desk. She looked up my account and advised I had exhausted all my gym punches and my membership was expired. I did not have my wallet on me, and I was not sure what to do. She was kind and allowed me to work out and was able to charge a card that I had previously used. My workout was getting shorter the more we went through this song and dance, but I was happy to finally get on with it.

I had a blister on my hand from the kettlebells, so I pulled out my brand new gloves Rebekah bought me for Valentine’s Day. I put the right one on and went to put the left one on, but it was a right glove as well. I tried to make it work but my attempts were futile. I laughed as I shook my head in disbelief and took out my frustration on my now extremely short workout.

We sometimes make grand plans and have great ambitions that are foiled by circumstances out of our control. We plan for a picnic and it rains, or we schedule a road trip and have car problems. Life does not always go as planned and even the best laid plans are thwarted. We also make plans without God and our end result is quite different than what we had anticipated. It never hurts to plan ahead, but God should always be at the base of everything we do. We should end our phrases with, “Lord-willing” or, “If God will allow.”

Do your future plans include God? Do you bypass His guidance and blessing when it comes to your planning? Have you encountered heartache and turmoil due to not including God in what you wanted to do? Have you learned from past failures or are you still doing things your way and making plans that disregard God? May we come to realize that God controls all things and it is always best to consult with Him first. I thank God for the breath He has given me today, and Lord willing I will be able to enjoy another day tomorrow.
