Love At First Thought

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

I John 4:10

I remember coming home late one night from work and seeing a pair of baby shoes on the nightstand where Rebekah slept. I always gave her a kiss when I got home, and I was elated at the the surprise she had for me. The shoes were blue which signified a baby boy (even though at that time we had no clue as to the gender) and I was so excited to become a dad.

I had no idea how different my life would become but things in my life were definitely changing. I only had the glimpse of an ultrasound but I began to fall in love with my baby boy. I was excited as the due date drew near, and a bond with my son started to form in me even though I had not yet met him. I began to anticipate what his life would be, and I even created him as a player on my video football game. I felt like there was nothing I wouldn’t do for him, and he even compelled me to want to be a better man even though he had never said a word. I loved my boy prior to his arrival, and I knew this bond would never be broken.

I think of our Heavenly Father and the love He had for me before I even knew who He was. I think of the plans He had for me even though I was not yet formed or even a thought in anyone’s mind. I think of the purpose He had for me and the time in history that He would place me in. I think of how He knew the evil sins that I would commit, but yet He still chose to love me. I think of the plan He had to redeem me of those sins and one day take my punishment. He is the essence of love, and He loved me from the beginning. He had no strings attached, and He willingly sent His Son to die in my place because He loved me so. To know God is to know an amazing love and to know what love really is.

How about you friend? Do you know that God loves you? Do you know He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for you? Do you know that Jesus’ death paid your sin payment in full? How about you Christian? Are you thankful for God’s amazing love? Is your life an outpouring of His love or do you grumble and speak ill of others? May we never forget the great love He has for us, and may we ever be grateful that His love for us carried His Son to the cross. John 15:13 states, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” How great a love God has for us and what a wonderful thing to be called His friend.
