“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”Genesis 1: 3-5
I went to the fair with my best friend when I was 16, and we had a plan in mind. We were going to meet my girlfriend and another girl my friend was interested in. It ended up that my girlfriend was not able to meet me at the fair, but my friend’s love interest brought a friend along whom I also knew very well. We were kind-of friends and were paired up to go on the rides together, which made it awkward for me. I had a girlfriend and was not interested, but I was forced to play wingman for the night.
We went on rides that quite frankly scared me as I am not one who is in love with roller coasters. I did not want to seem like a chicken, so I just hung on tight and closed my eyes. The girl laughed at me and thought it was great fun to see me squirm and act like a big baby. I looked for less scary rides to ride, so I could prolong my life somewhat for the future. I found a ride that did not climb and had no massive turns and seemed pretty passive. I saw young kids in line, so I felt it was safe to board. When we got into line, I was puzzled to hear the sound of screaming coming from the inside of the ride.
I looked closer at the ride and noticed it was a haunted house ride which I thought was quite humorous and silly. I got on the ride confidently and felt like there was nothing to be scared of. The ride started and it had the predictable silly monsters coming out at you and skeletons that popped out from the ceiling. People screamed at that and I simply laughed as I knew this was part of the ride and not real. We went around another corner and then the ride turned pitch black. I put my hand close to my face, and I could not see it for the life of me. I could not hear any sound and I suddenly became fearful as I was not sure what was coming next. We were “attacked” and then suddenly the ride started moving again and the doors open to the bright lights of the fair. My heart was pounding from the episode of darkness, but I was relieved to see the lights again.
Spiritually, I was the same way living in darkness until I saw the Light of the World. John 8:12 states, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.“ I think of these verses in Genesis and how God divided light and darkness. I think of how He made light just by speaking it into existence. I think of the light that He created to be all the light we would ever need. I thank God for the spiritual light He brought into the world when He sent His Son, and for the spiritual light He brought into my life when I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. His light drowned out the darkness in my life. He is the Light and in Him is no in darkness at all. I think of how Moses glowed after spending time with God, and how I glow after I spend time with Him.
Where are you today friend? Is your life filled with darkness or have you come to know the Light of the World? Do you feel like you are spiritually in the dark where you can’t seem to find your way or true peace? How about you Christian? Do you find yourself fearful with what is going on in the world? Are you walking in the light as He in the light? I John 1:7 states, “But if we walk in the light, as is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” May we work for the Lord day and night, and use the time He has given us for His honor and glory. May we allow His light to shine in us, and may the world be turned from darkness to light.
