“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”Hebrews 4:12
It has been said if you don’t know where to read in your Bible, that you should always start in Proverbs. I have tried to make it habit to read a chapter in Proverbs that corresponds with the day of the month. Needless to say, I have read the same chapter several times over the course of my life, but God will always use something familiar to speak to me in a different way.
I have been at events, and heard “true story” speeches which bring me to tears. I have been inspired by someone’s life and encouraged to make changes in my own due to the story of another. My favorite genre of movie are the ones based on a true story, and my all time favorite is Boy’s Town. It seems every time I watch it, my eyes fill with tears, and my heart is overjoyed.
Although these stories are powerful, there is nothing like the Word of God to open a heart and pierce all the way through. I have been in church listening to a message and I felt like I heard someone say, “scalpel please.” My heart was opened and God was performing life-changing transformation with the Word of God. There is nothing like the Word of God to change one’s life. I was talking to a friend last week who was being challenged by the book of Galatians, and he shared me how God was working in his life.
The Word of God is a straight stick and it exposes all the crooked sticks compared against it. It is undefeated in the history of existence, and there is no other book that can stand against it. It exposes our motives, our intent and our wicked hearts. It is also a manual to correct all those things and lead us into a right relationship with our Heavenly Father. God’s Word is truth that we so desperately need in a world of deception and lies. The father of all lies cannot combat the powerful truth of the Word of God.
Are you in God’s Word? Do you expect change but not willing to do it God’s way? The Word of God cannot change your life if you’re not reading and listening to it. If we drive by the gym but never go in, we cannot expect anything to change. God’s Word will change your life, but you must open it, memorize and meditate on it. We have the most powerful tool in all the world, but we complain about our lives and make poor decisions because we simply don’t read the Word of God. We ignore its power when we are too busy, and we are essentially telling God that we know better than Him. May we take time every day for His Word, and may we allow God to perform open heart surgery on our wicked hearts. The best way to start the day is to read your Bible, and the best way to judge your heart is through God’s truth. Bible reading to start the day will help you deal with problems and temptations that will come your way.
