Idol Factories

“Ye shall make you no idols nor graven (carved) image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.”

Leviticus 26:1

Recently at church, I heard our youth pastor refer to our hearts as idol factories. He spoke of how we eliminate one idol in life in order to build another one to take its place. All types of things clamor for our attention and pull at our heart. Many of these things are not bad in and of themselves, but if we are not careful, we will start to make an idol of them. Like myself, many immerse themselves in all types of things, and become engrossed in things of this world, and we sometimes forget our first love.

I have been guilty of building idols in my heart, finding time for everything under the sun but leaving myself with no time to spend with my God. I have used the excuse that I am too busy to spend time with God, only to know the truth that I am just too busy then. The children of Israel were warned about building idols with stones, but it seems we have taken that to another level and build idols with all types of materials. We build idols of social media, sports, fitness, diet, and fashion. We live for people to like our photos on Instagram, and we are disappointed and downtrodden when no one comments on our Facebook posts.

Proverbs 4:23 states, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are (spring) the issues of life.” We must be careful what we allow in our heart as there are many things that vie for it. I know if I am not diligent in this, I will find myself far from my Lord and in a place I never wanted to be. I know my heart is wicked, and I know my idol factory is always at work attempting to make more idols in my life when I eliminate old ones.

How are you doing today friend? Have you placed things above your God? Is your idol factory fully staffed with workers seeking to build more, or have you cut your staff in an attempt to live for your God? What takes up most of your time? What are your thoughts fixated upon? What idols have you set up in your heart? Matthew 6:33 states, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” May we seek Him first in all things, and may we not bow to anything or anyone but the King of Kings.

Stay in the Fight!
