“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.”Numbers 23:19-20
I travelled to Portland, Oregon and saw a flag hanging from a church’s front porch that really puzzled me. I knew what the flag meant, but I did not understand why it was flying in front of a church. I was shocked and puzzled at this sight as I knew what God’s Word said and this ran contrary to what this particular church was trying to promote with the flag. This was several years back and I have since seen this occur in many other churches who seek to gain acceptance and be inclusive to a lost world. I know it is a way for them to try and “fit in”, but the world will not and cannot be changed by those who seek to fit in and be a part of it. God did not call us to be like the world, even though we are temporary residents of it. Jesus explained this in John 17:16 when He said of his disciples, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”
Sadly, I have seen Christians take a step back from what is right as they seem to be more scared of what the world will think of them than what God thinks of them. I am not blameless as I have been convicted of shying away from proclaiming the truth because I was concerned with what others may think. I am not promoting hatred against another, but there is a time to stand for what is the truth, even though you may lose friends along the way. The world is not rejecting you, but it is ultimately rejecting the Savior of the world. We were never meant to fit in this world, and if we do, that is a damning statement about our walk with God.
God’s truth will always stand, and we cannot twist the Word of God to say what it has not said. God’s Word is unchangeable and is not affected by the era we are in or the feeling of others. Hebrews 4:12 states, “For the word of God is quick (living), and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder (division) of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” The Word of God is what shows us what is right and what is wrong, and as much as we may try, we cannot deviate from what Creator God has said and expect to prosper in His world. God’s Word will always stand and His promises cannot be broken.
Balak, the Moabite king, attempted to have the prophet Balaam curse God’s people, but Balaam realized that he could not go against what God said. The cursing of the Israelites would have been futile as he knew God was not in it, and God had already given him direct instructions on what to tell Balak. We often get into trouble when we try and say that which God has not said to please man or attempt to appease our guilty conscience. God cannot lie and His Word will always be His word. He has said what He has said, and He means exactly that, no matter if it popular or not.
Where are you today? Have you attempted to twist God’s Word to appease your guilt? Have you caved in to the pressures of the world to be accepted by man rather than be accepted by God? Truth is not relative, but is established by almighty God. May we not lean to our own understanding, but instead cleave to the truth no matter what it may cost us. May God help us to be a light in this dark world, and may we always be found speaking the truth of God’s Word in love.
