Happy Birthday!

“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

Proverbs 31:26-31

Halloween has always been a day that I have remembered since 1991. You may find that to be odd- to me it was due to Rebekah’s birthday, not because of Halloween. I remember selling my basketball cards just so I could buy her a birthday present. My first gifts to her were flowers and some chocolate. I was new to the game, so I had purchased the milk chocolate and not the dark chocolate like she likes. I went to the drug store prior to school and made my big purchase. I dreamed of taking her to dinner at an elegant fast food restaurant, but I had no car and no permission. In the times we were not together, I would always think of her on this day no matter where I found myself. I would wonder what she was doing to celebrate her birthday. Her birthday never passed where I did not think of her and wonder what she was doing. I often thought of calling her on her birthday,  but I lacked the nerve to do so. I often hoped the day would come where I could spend this special day with her, and I am grateful that I get to celebrate her special day with her now.

As I read this Proverb, it is a reminder to me that I have been blessed with a godly, virtuous woman. At first, I was simply attracted to her blonde hair and blue eyes, but I fell in love with her kindness, intelligence, and love for God. I was mesmerized by those blue eyes, but I have come to know much more about her inner beauty. I am thankful to God for Rebekah and the kindness and love she has shown me and countless others. She is a blessing to a lot of ladies, and she lights up any room she walks into. She is generous with her time and is always ready with a kind, uplifting word. I have seen her cry due to the empathy she feels for people she does not even know. I am not sure how her eyes possess so much water in them, but I have never met anyone who cares so deeply about others. She completes me in many ways, and I will be ever grateful for the help meet God has given me.

I know many of you have experienced Rebekah in this way, and can attest to what God is doing in her life. God always looks on the heart and is more pleased with those that do right than those who look right. I am reminded in God’s Word that we are to give honor to whom honor is due, and I felt this passage was appropriate to honor my wife. God lays out the qualities of a virtuous woman, and it is the mark that should be sought by all godly women. I praise God for the virtuous women in my life that I call sister, mom, and wife. I commend you ladies who desire to be virtuous and seek after God, as He will lift you up in His time. May this passage encourage you to continue living for Him, and may you continue to seek beauty that is praised by the LORD.
