God Will Provide

“And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.”

Genesis 22:6-8

The very second I entered this world, I was in need of a Savior. I was born with a sin nature, and I am sure it did not take me long to begin my active career in sin. I do not have memories of my birth, and my first few years of life are missing from my brain files. I can recall bits and pieces from my early childhood, but really do not remember much before I was three years old. I am sure, however, I was selfish and wanted my own way, and although I have matured, I still struggle with these things.

I was introduced to Faith Promise Missions by our pastor in the small church Rebekah and I attended as a newly-married couple. He preached how we needed to pray to know what God would have us to give, and depend on Him to provide. I would like to say I was full of faith, but this was definitely a test as it did not make financial sense. I am not sure Dave Ramsey would approve of this “faith financial plan”, but one year, God worked in our hearts and we committed to an amount we really could not afford. We turned in our commitment and agreed to trust the LORD for the amount we felt He led us to give.

We were doing well until one day we were not. Things started to get tight on our budget and then the bills were overwhelmingly more than what we had in our checking account. The bills were about $600 more than we had, and I knew we had to trust God. Rebekah and I prayed and asked God to provide what only He could provide. We slept well that night and had peace of what He would do. I checked our mail every day, but the Publishers Clearing House check never arrived in the mail. We did not waver in our faith and we simply trusted God to provide. The weekend came and we received a letter from our private mortgage insurance (PMI). We had over payed that year and there was in check made out to us for over $600. We rejoiced God had provided and thanked Him for His perfect timing. He knew all along we would need the money, and the check came exactly when we needed it.

I think of what Isaac may have thought as they had all the essential tools and equipment for a sacrifice – except for the sacrifice itself. Abraham did not worry and did not hesitate in obeying God, but had faith that goes beyond explanation. I think of Abraham’s response when Isaac asked him about the sacrifice, “God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering.” We will have to read more of the story to see what happened, but we know that God did provide a ram for a sacrifice that day, and a Lamb for the ultimate sacrifice. The Lamb came in the form of His Son, Jesus, and He was perfect in every way. We face hopelessness and ultimate despair, but God had a plan. Our sin nature requires a remedy, but we need to simply have faith and believe in the Lamb that God has provided to escape eternal doom. The remedy of our hopelessness is found only in the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

Where are you today friend? Have you accepted God’s Son as your Lord and Savior, the Lamb who was the sacrifice for your sins? If you have trusted in Him for your need of a Savior, are you depending on Him for all of your other needs? Are you anxious in your thoughts? Do you have needs you need to take to the Father instead of worrying about them?  Philippians 4:6 states, “Be careful (anxious) for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Will you worry or will you trust Him to supply your needs? May God help us in our unbelief and may we never doubt the God of the impossible.

Stay in the Fight!
