What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?Romans 8:31
We sometimes think that when we sin, it only affects us. We believe we aren’t hurting anyone, and we feel like an island unto ourselves. Sin is hardly contained to our own life and it nearly always extends beyond us to those we love and come in contact with. The weight of sin can become quite heavy, and eventually it becomes a burden that spills out onto others. It affects our personality and our demeanor, and it robs us of the joy of our salvation. John 15:11 states, “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” There is nothing quite as satisfying as the joy of Jesus Christ, and there is nothing quite as burdensome as unconfessed sin.
I have experienced both of these things in my own life, and I would 100% rather have the joy of the Lord than the burden of sin. I remember two specific times God convicted me of sin in my life, and I recall falling on my knees in repentance and sorrow for the sins I committed against Him. The burden that was lifted off my shoulders when I made things right with God brought peace and a sense of freedom and joy that nothing else in this world can provide. To be clean from sin and close to God brings a feeling of peace like nothing else.
Satan does not like this peace and will do anything to rob you of God’s joy. He is a thief and a liar and will strive to keep you in sin. If he cannot keep you in sin, he will strive to whisper in your ear that your sin is too great for God to forgive. The amazing thing about God’s forgiveness is that when we repent of our sin, He remembers it no more. Psalm 103:12 states, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” His forgiveness is full and final, and He is always faithful to forgive us as 1 John 1:9 beautifully proclaims. Sin brings the lie that God is against us, but God brings the guilt of sin to draw us back to Himself.
I can think of no greater assurance than knowing that if God is for me, than nothing and no one else can be against me. Who can withstand God and who is greater than He? God does not lurk nearby, waiting for me to mess up so He can punish me. Rather, He is by my side, changing me into His perfect image as I strive to grow in Him. He does not leave me alone in this world filled with sin, but He goes beside me and even prays for me. He is my heavenly Father and desires His perfect will in my life. He does not desire that I live with the burden of sin, but He wants me to confess and forsake my sin and experience the victory of living free from sin.
Where are you today friend? Do you live with the burden of sin? Have you made things right with God, only to be discouraged by the whispered lies of the Devil? Do you realize that God is on your side? Do you realize your Heavenly Father desires His perfect will for your life? Once forgiven, God does not hold your sin against you, but forgives you fully and completely. God is the One who fights for you and prays for you, and if He is for you, who can be against you?
