God Does As He Pleases

“For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul (annul) it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?”

Isaiah 14:27

I have tried to manipulate many situations to turn things in my direction for my benefit. I met a girl in kindergarten and I had a crush on her all the way to the seventh grade. I did all that I could to garner her attention, and she noticed me, but not in the way that I had hoped. I was firmly in the “friend zone”, but I was not content to remain there. I remember she came over to our house one night as my family was hosting a prayer meeting and had invited her family over. I took a shower so that I could be fresh and clean, and I even put on a splash of Brute 33 to help seal the deal. I thought I would need something extra that night, so I had a brilliant plan to give myself a temporary tattoo.

I pulled out my markers and decided to draw veins on my legs and arms in order to make her think I had muscles, which my eight-year-old skinny frame did not possess. I proudly appeared in the living room spelling like cheap cologne, with green marker drawn on my legs and arms to look like veins. I failed as a tattoo artist as she asked me why I had green marks all over my arms and legs. I am sure this made her doubt that I took a shower at all. I tried to play it off and said I was trying to be like the Hulk, which made her laugh and smile. I wish I could be flattered by this, but I do believe she was laughing at me and not because I was clever in any way. No matter what I did, I could never change her heart to like me, and to make things worse, she fell head over heels for my older cousin.

I have come to learn that I cannot manipulate others to do what I want them to do, no matter how bad I desire an outcome. The situations that can be manipulated do not turn out like I want them to, and I have learned that manipulation is an ugly way to get your way. People are manipulated all the time, but God is not manipulated, nor can He be. He does as He pleases and no one can stop what He has put in place. We sometimes try to pray to Him and make deals that will favor us, but He is under no obligation to answer those prayers, and we are even commanded to not pray according to our own desires. We have nothing we can bargain with as He owns and is in control of all things. Nothing and no one can go against God and He will always do according to His own will.

Are you one who seeks to control or manipulate things in your favor? Do you think you possess the power only God possesses? Have you tried to make deals with God, only thinking of your selfish motives and goals? Do you take comfort in knowing that God does as He pleases? He is in control of all things, and may we take great comfort in knowing His will is always done and His will can always be trusted.

Stay in the Fight!
