“Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.”3 John 1:11
My uncle used to work at America West Arena and one of the perks of him working there was that he had access to the Phoenix Suns Athletic Club. My uncle bought me a gift card to the club as a Christmas gift, and I continued my membership there until it closed down for good. The club had weights and cardiovascular equipment and even offered select times when we could use the Suns practice court. I was excited to shoot on the same court many of the great players of my era played on. I loved all the aspects of the gym, and I was sad to see it close.
One particular evening there, I got out of the steam room and was headed to the showers. There was a former NBA player about 10 feet in front of me who was also headed to the showers, but I kept my head down as I followed him. He did not have a towel on, so I kept my eyes downward to avoid an awkward situation. I was looking at the ground and did not notice that, as I followed him, he had stopped to talk to someone else in the locker room. By the time I realized, it was too late and the 10 feet of distance I was keeping was now only 10 inches. I suddenly stopped in my tracks, and he looked at me like I was some kind of weirdo, but there was nothing I could do. I could not explain myself or my reasoning, so I simply avoided eye contact, looked down again, and headed straight to the showers. After that, I hated running into him at the club as it was awkward, and I learn to pay attention as to where I was going in the locker room. The story is quite funny now, but it was less humorous when it happened that day.
We live in a world of chaos and unrest. There is contention spewing out of every corner, and it seems there are masses of people following an ideal or movement. We must be careful of whom and what we follow as many are not pleasing to God. We have heard things that are ungodly and seen actions that are outright evil. We have witnessed people do wicked things and watched masses support them. We have listened as people use religion to express their point even though God is nowhere to be found in their actions. We must take a stand for what is right and show our dark world the light that cannot be put out – the light of God in our lives through God-pleasing words and actions.
Where are you today friend? Are you carefully evaluating whom or what you follow based on the truth of God’s word? Do you follow after that which is good? Do you seek to prove a point or do you seek to do that which is pleasing to God? Are you more concerned with your political affiliation then you are with following after God? What does this world see in you? Do they see one who seeks to exalt his/her own opinion or one who brings honor and glory to God? Be ever mindful as it does not take much for us to get off track. May we be concerned with following after God and may our deeds and actions always be pleasing to Him.
