“This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away (rejected) concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.”I Timothy 1:18-20
I grew up in a conservative home that held to conservative beliefs. My parents were careful on the churches we fellowshipped with, and there were certain churches which I was not allowed to attend even such events like Vacation Bible School. The churches did not align with our doctrine (teaching), and at the time, I did not fully understand the difference. Our pastor would preach against those who seemed to be spiritual but strayed from the faith. One year, there was a big conference being held in Phoenix and it involved many of the churches in the valley. Our church was being recruited to attend this event, but our pastor did not seem to think it was a great idea.
Our pastor revealed to us what this event was. He informed us that there would be false doctrine taught and the event would involve churches that did not believe in the gospel but rather a works salvation. The event was really asking our church to compromise what we believed in the name of sharing the “gospel”. We were to water down the gospel to make it accessible to unbelievers and not be so harsh in preaching a literal hell. The man who was leading the event is a well-known Christian author that many of you would know if I mentioned his name. We were warned to not attend the event and to not compromise when presenting or speaking of the power of the gospel. Romans 1:16 states, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
Needless to say, my family and I did not attend the event, and although I did not understand all the reasons why, I did understand it was due to a false doctrine that was being taught. We live in a world where people see themselves as religious but they are lost and on their way to hell. They say such things as, “Speak it into existence”, and “Name it and claim it.” These cliches falsely carry the weight of God as if God’s main reason for us to occupy earth was for us to be happy and live in substantial wealth. People generally do not want to hear about a literal hell, and the most “successful” preachers are the ones who do not preach about sin and hell, but only mention that God wants you to live your best life in this present world. The best life they preach has nothing to do with living for God but rather achieving all of your earthly and financial dreams. Even if that life is achieved, it is hollow and unsatisfying because Jesus Christ is the only one who can satisfy. The preachers who preach this false gospel tickle the ears of their hearers, but care little about where their listeners are headed if they do not accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Mark 8:36 states, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
We have the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and there is no room for compromising that truth. The truth does not change based on feelings or ideas, but it remains the truth because it is the truth. There is no truth outside of our God, and we must stand firm and not be moved about by every wave of doctrine or popular thinking. I Corinthians 15:58 states, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” We will have to fight for the truth even though it may cost us our family, our friends, our jobs, and in some parts of the world, our lives. I have seen some stray from the faith and follow that which is popular instead of that which is right. They simply followed the masses and bent their ear to what pleased them.
Who are you following today? Who are you listening to? Which books, articles, and posts are you reading? Are you aware of the doctrine you are putting into your minds? Are you reading your Bible and filling your mind and heart with God’s knowledge, or are you more interested in the worldly news of the day? We will not be able to fight against false doctrine if we do not have the knowledge of the truth. John 14:6 states, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Some say there are many ways to heaven, but Jesus said He is the only way. May we stay in the fight when it comes to defending and preaching the truth, and may we never compromise what we want to believe over what God has said in His Word.
