“But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?”Exodus 1:17-18
We get into trouble in life when we fear man more than we fear God. I think of the many times is my life when I thought to impress others instead of obeying my God. When I was in elementary school, we had a big soccer game planned one day that the whole school was going to attend, and I had hopes of making a big splash. I got into trouble for singing the national anthem in a girl’s voice, even though my voice had not yet matured yet. My whole class thought it was funny except for my nemesis classmate and my teacher.
My national anthem singing happened during the first class of the day, so it did not take me long to get into trouble. I was sent to the principal’s office for my shenanigans, and the punishment they handed down to me was that I was not able to attend or play in the soccer game. I was disappointed as I hoping to impress a girl in the third grade, but I would be relegated to a half-day detention and have to stay at school. I bragged to some of the kids that were left at school and told them I “got busted”. I am not sure if they thought I was cool, but I thought that by bragging about it, they would think I was cool. I cared more about what they thought than I did my parents, as I told everyone I knew, including my sister who told my parents about me. I got a spanking when I got home on top of missing out on the big soccer game because I wanted to impress people who didn’t really matter.
Long before we were aware of abortion, it was being performed in Egypt. The king of Egypt had commanded the midwives of Egypt to abort the Hebrew baby boys because the children of Israel were becoming a great nation as God had promised. The midwives did not cave into the pressure or the law of the king because they feared almighty God. Proverbs 29:25 “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.”
In today’s society, abortion is rampant all over the world because we have chosen our own way instead of God’s way. We do not want to be troubled with our consequences, and we care more about what we and others think than what God thinks. It is a fearful thing to care more about the creation than the Creator and to fear man more than we fear God. Matthew 10:28 states “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” We forget about ultimate consequences and we forget there is a hell for all who do not believe.
Where are you today friend? Do you fear what the government may say over what God has instructed you to do? If push came to shove, would you obey God rather than man? The apostles were being persecuted and imprisoned, but Peter stood up and chose to obey God. Acts 5:29 tells us, “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.” When the going gets tough, will you take a stand and obey God rather than man, or will the fear of man bring a snare? May we fear God in all things and may we obey Him at all times.
