“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing (penny)? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”Matthew 10:29-31
I remember as a kid going into the grocery store with my mom, and I never worried about the shelves being stocked as they seemed to always be full. She would go to the meat counter and push the button to have the butcher come out to discuss the type of meat she was looking for. He would make the cut and come back with the requested meat wrapped in wax paper. I don’t ever remember the butcher not having what she wanted. I would salivate as I thought about what my mom would do with the meat, and I could almost taste it as my imagination ran wild.
In 2020, I was shocked to see the depletion of goods that previously graced the shelves which now stood bare. People panicked and gathered all they could. There was no thought of others, but it was solely to ensure they would be taken care of no matter what came in the months to follow. We saw toilet paper shortages and people fighting over double ply like it was gold. The demand brought out the worst in people and the stores soon became a war zone.
There has been new talk of food shortages and there are some empty shelves as stores struggle to keep up with demand. There are ads for food storage supplies that have a long shelf life in case the worst happens as we brace for the unknown. If you dwell on what is going on, you may wonder if God cares. You may wonder if God is in control as there are rumors of agricultural shortages and rising prices. You may worry as if God did not see this coming as the cost of fuel is at an all-time high and the price of living continues to climb. The God who cares about the sparrow is the same God who cares for you. The God who sent His Son to die for you is the same God who sustains you everyday. If He cares and sustains the sparrows, how much more does He care about you?
As Christians, we should not worry as others because we have a Heavenly Father who cares about our needs. Our Father does not forget His children and He is always in control. Our Father knows the finest details of our lives all the way down to numbering the very hairs on our head. When I was younger, this was a harder task, but age has made it a little easier. Nothing goes unnoticed by our good God. I find great peace and comfort as I look to the future as I know God is in control, and He knows and is working His plan in what will come. Psalms 37:25 states, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”
Where are you today friend? Do you lose sleep thinking of what may come, or do you rest in knowing that God cares? Do you doubt that He cares as you look at the world around you? Do you grow scared as you listen to the news or hear the concerns and fear of others? May we not be like those who have no hope, but may we rest in the comfort and promises of our great God. Does God care? Yes, He cares. He cares for us like no one else. May may we never doubt His care for us.
