Commanded To Love

“I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.”

II John 1:4-6

When I was growing up there were many things I did not have a choice in. I was forced to do things I did not want to do, and I was sometimes bitter that I had to do them. My parents never asked me if I wanted to go to school and never asked me if I wanted to go to church. We went to church when the doors were open and even sometimes were the ones to open them. We sometimes when on days there was no church, and I cannot remember a time when my parents chose not to go. I missed Super Bowls, Suns games and even some family gatherings. I thought my parents were so unreasonable until I got older and saw the big picture. I was taught to love God and to serve Him from a heart of love.

God has worked in my life through my parents example, and I have come to know my own personal walk with God. What was once my parent‘s walk with God has become my personal walk with God. I was taught to love even when I did not want to do because that was the commandment from old. Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” I know firsthand what it means about rejoicing to see your children walking in truth. The “truth” of this world changes from day to day but God’s truth never will change and it always right and true.

In our society we our bombarded by social media, news articles, and people’s opinions on what is right and wrong. I was taught the 10 commandments at a young age, and I was taught to love my neighbor as myself. I was taught to walk in God’s commandment, and I was taught to love as He had loved me. I would like to say I love everyone as I love myself but I struggle with loving some people more than others I come across. I am grateful that my parents never asked my opinion on what I thought was wrong or right but taught me straight from God’s Word. God’s truth still stands today and is relevant today as it was when it was first written.

Where are you today friend? Do you struggle with who to follow? Are you confused by all that is going on around you? Are you loving to your fellow man? Are you walking in the commandments of God or in what you feel is right? Proverbs 21:2 states, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” What does your heart say about you? You can fool people but the LORD truly knows our hearts. May we be found walking in His commandments, and may we have love one to another.
