Believing Without Seeing

“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.”

Hebrews 10:38

There have been moments in my life when I searched for God and didn’t feel like He was near. Times when I went through trials and other times when I had forsaken Him. I always found my way back as God had never left. Belief in God requires faith but it is not hard to see His presence all around us.

I received a text message one day from an old friend and the text simply said, ”Do you still go to church?” I responded yes and agreed to meet him for dinner. We reconnected our friendship and my friend started the process of restoring His relationship with God. He started to attend Freedom That Lasts and we grew closer by the day.

My friend was facing a possible prison sentence and He pleaded with God to not allow Him to go. God choose to answer no to his request, and he was sentenced to prison. The news was devastating to my dear friend, but he did not waver in his belief. Through correspondence, visits and phone calls, my friend has shared with me the struggles and heartbreak he has faced. I know many in his same situation would have given up and thrown in the towel.

I recently received a letter from my friend, and he spoke of how God was working in his life. He did not understand all of what God was doing, but he was fully trusting in Him. I have seen God change my friend from the time I received the out-of-the-blue text to where he is now. He has learned to trust God without fully knowing the plan, and He has learned to take Him at His Word. It is one thing to believe something you have seen, but it takes faith to believe in that in which you have not seen.

I have across some who will say, “I’m from the show me state!” Faith requires belief prior to the showing and we must take God at His Word. I look all around and see the hand of God as the glory of the Lord is revealed through creation. I have seen God work time and time again in my life. He has provided me with a spouse I never thought I would marry, and a job I never thought I would get. He is a faithful God, and I am learning that I need to live by faith.

How about you? Have you ever lost your faith in God? Have circumstances led you away from what you believe? Do you take God at His Word or do you require a sign? Do you believe without seeing, knowing that God is always at work? Do you take time to reflect on all God has done in your life? Do you see His hand at work in situations and trials He has allowed in your life? Are you living by faith or is your life troubled by worry and concern? May we live by faith and learn to take God at His Word. May we find rest in Him in this life, as we have placed our faith in Him for the life to follow.
