“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.”Psalm 69:30
I remember a Christmas when Rebekah and I were newly married. We opened up our presents, and I was excited like a little kid. I had asked for various things and then told Rebekah to surprise me.
I opened up one of the main gifts and saw a dart board peeking behind the wrapper. I thought there was something in the box, but to my chagrin, it was a legit dart board. I was disappointed and became angry. I didn’t play darts and I had no intention of playing darts. I asked Rebekah why she would buy this for me, and she told me she thought I would like the dart board. She wanted to surprise me with something different, and thought I would enjoy playing darts. I strongly disagreed with her sentiment, and I acted like a big fat jerk. My dad was not pleased with me, and told me that I needed to be thankful. I will say that was not one of my finer moments, and I learned I needed to be thankful.
When I read this verse, I think of all things that I have to be thankful for. I think of the things I take for granted and the things He abundantly provides. We take one day for Thanksgiving but it really should be a way of life. I have no problem finding things to complain about, yet words of thanksgiving often escape my lips.
I am thankful for the sounds my ears hear when I wake up and the sunlight my eyes see in the morning. For the salvation He freely gave me and the mercy and grace He bestows upon me. For the forgiveness of sins when I ask Him, and for being a friend that sticks closer than a brother. A love that is perfect and a love dependent on Him and not on my actions. A Father who will one day welcome me home and a Father who has adopted me and made me an heir. A Father who gives me my daily bread and the One who promised me I would never thirst again. There are no words that can give due praise to the goodness of God, and we will have all eternity to praise His name with song.
Are you grateful for God who is always good? Are you wrapped up in your own circumstances and complaints that you forget to magnify Him with thanksgiving? Do you wait for the Thanksgiving holiday to give thanks or do you have a heart of gratitude? May we be thankful for the dart boards we are given, and may we take time daily to give God thanks. He is worthy of our song and praise and by Him are all things freely given. Praise God for His goodness and may we always remember that God is good all the time. Happy Thanksgiving and praise God from whom all blessings flow.
