“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”James 1:17
I was working in retail while in the market for a new job. I wanted to work a Monday through Friday shift, and I wanted to be exposed to better opportunities than what retail had to offer me. I looked online and started my search for top employers in the State of Arizona. I began to apply at these top companies and then focused in on a particular company about which I had heard good things. I applied at that company more than 20 times over an 18-month period for all sorts of jobs. I received numerous rejections, but it did not discourage my efforts to keep applying. I pressed on until one day I got an invitation to take an employment test.
I was excited to finally receive a positive response, and I sat down and took the test. The test dealt with personality, ethics and basic intelligence. I took the test and then received paperwork to go and get a drug test. The company soon scheduled me for an interview and things were looking up. I was shortly offered a job, and I was at my retail job when I received the email with my new work contract. I broke out in tears as I read the email, and I quickly called Rebekah. I told her the good news and promptly put in a three-week notice at work. I was elated about my new job but I forgot to thank my God.
It has been several years since I began my new job, and I recently underwent my yearly review process. I received a great review and a nice raise. I was trying to hide my excitement as my manager shared the good news with me, but I had a cheesy grin on my face. I called Rebekah after I got out of the meeting, and I patted myself on the back. I was proud of myself and again forgot to thank my God.
Thirty minutes went by and God convicted me of my ungratefulness. I immediately stopped what I was doing and thanked Him for my raise and the favor He has shown me at my job. I thanked Him for all He has given me, and the answered prayer of my job. He began to show me that I am nothing without Him, but all things are possible with Him. Every day that I walk into work I thank Him for the gift of my job, and I thank Him for His provision. I thank Him for His good gift of work, and He reminds me of such when I begin to complain.
Are you thankful today? Are you grateful for what God has provided? Are you grateful for the gifts He has bestowed upon you? The gift of His Son? The gift of life? The gift of all good things? Do you realize all that He has given you? Do you seek to praise yourself or are you quick to fall on your knees and thank Him? May we be quick to praise our Heavenly Father for all that He bestows, and may we praise Him even more than the times we ask Him for things.
