“Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”I Corinthians 4:1-2
I think back to the times as a kid when I was given money for a church or school outing. Dad or Mom gave me a fixed amount of money for the activity in which I was to participate. They instructed me on how and when I was to use it. I was not allowed to spend it on video games, and I had to return any unneeded funds.
Church camp was a good example. It began on Sunday and ended the following Saturday, and I knew my money had to last the whole week. I’d watch some kids spend everything they had on snacks at our first gas stop. So, barely an hour out of town their money was gone. I was often the brunt of jokes because I refused to buy anything. That usually lasted until about midweek when suddenly those same kids were asking me for money. By the end of the week, I normally had just enough to buy my lunch, and a little bit to give back to my parents. I had a healthy fear of them, and I obeyed their financial advice to a tee. It has always served me well. My parents never gave me a whole lot, but what they did give me was sufficient to meet my needs with a little extra leftover.
I share this simple story because God has given us specific gifts and they are meant to be used for His honor and glory. He requires that we be found faithful in what He has given us. Because we have a higher calling, He does not want us to spend all of our resources on the things of this world. God will one day evaluate what we have done, and He will be the judge of our motives. I am reminded of the verse in Luke 12:48 which states in part, “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required.” God have given us a set amount of talents, time, and resources. He knows when we use them for the praise of man or for the praise of God.
Where are you today, friend? What will you tell God when you stand before Him? Are you faithful with what He has given you? Are you a good steward of His resources? Do you seek the praise of man or do you long to hear the praise of almighty God? When our time comes, may we be found faithful, and may He find us busy in His work. May we be careful not to spend our resources foolishly, and may we be found a wise steward when we stand before Him.
