“And they returned from searching of the land after forty days. And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither (where) thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.“Numbers 13:25-29
In the late 90s, God brought Rebekah and me to a small church near our new house, and this was our first church we attended as a married couple. We learned a lot in this church, primarily about having faith in God. We learned the power of prayer, and we saw God do amazing things through His people. Our missions giving rivaled that of bigger churches and even though we were small in number, we were not small in giving. I did not have much faith when we first got there, and I sometimes thought the pastor was crazy for asking God for the things he was praying for. Over and over again, I thought God was not interested in that particular thing or circumstance, and I thought there was no way God was going to answer his prayer. I doubted what God would do until I saw God do what only He could do, and my faith began to grow as I saw prayer after prayer answered.
Over the years, God gave our church a lawnmower, curbing for the parking lot, a modular building that we desperately needed, and so many other blessings. I saw people walk the aisle to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and I saw God work amidst the congregation. We held 24-hour prayer meetings in which we praised God and asked Him to do what only He can do. We saw Him answer those prayers and my confidence in Him only grew, and I felt as though I could ask Him to move mountains. I held tight onto His promises, and I kicked myself for ever doubting God. I wish I could remember all that He has done as my faith was at an all-time high, but Satan will use the difficult circumstances in life to try and discourage you.
I went through some tough times, and I forgot about all the things God had shown me and the prayers He had answered in my life. I forgot about the promises that are in His Word, and I doubted what He could do. I know I am not alone in this failing as God sent forth a representative from each of the tribes of Israel and they were tasked to give a report of the land they were on the verge of entering. The place was called the Promised Land, a good place that God had promised to His special people. The spies saw all that was wrong with the land and were scared to take what God had promised them. The forgot all the prayers God had answered and they forgot the miracles that God had performed on their behalf. Their bad report of the land did not mention the promise of God, but it focused on the occupants of the land who posed a threat. They did not consider that the God who parted the Red Sea to deliver them from their Egyptian enemies could also deliver them from the powerful inhabitants of the land He had promised them.
Where are you today in your faith with God? Have you forgotten His promises? Have you forgotten the answered prayers? Have you forgotten what He is able to do and the Red Seas He has taken you through? If your thoughts were to be revealed, would it show a good report of your faith in God, or would your report be one that you would be ashamed of? May we always remember and trust in the promises of God, and may our faith report of our amazing God always be an A+.
